Why use an SLP to treat and remediate your child's reading struggles?
A Speech-Language Pathologist is an expert in oral language development, which serves as the foundation for literacy. Most people think that Dyslexia primarily causes people to reverse the letters in words. However, a more significant issue is trouble recognizing phonemes (i.e. the fundamental sounds of speech, such as the “b” sound in “bat”). When children struggle identifying speech sounds, it becomes hard to make the connection between the sound and its letter symbol. Therefore, the meaning of the written sound or word is often lost, and reading comprehension suffers. A Speech-Language Pathologist will help build a child’s literacy by treating and supporting their phonemic awareness skills, among other areas such as:
Oral language comprehension and use (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics)
Auditory processing skills.
Articulation (the production of speech sounds)
Fundamental letter/sound knowledge
Short-term working memory
Our Speech and Language Team USES THE ORTON-GILLINGHAM APPROACH TO REMEDIATE READING, SPELLING, AND WRITING. THIS MULTISENSORY, SEQUENTIAL, and SYSTEMATIC approach is INDIVIDUALIZED TO MEET YOUR CHILD'S NEEDS.

A Note from our TEAM -
With potential speech and language delays, early intervention is key. Why wait and see when you can check and be sure? Identifying children with speech, language and learning challenges as early as possible and beginning early intervention services both shortens the duration of therapy overall and cuts off subsequent struggles that can present as children grow.
What can you expect from our Speech and Language Evaluation?
During our Comprehensive Speech and Language Evaluation, the speech-language pathologist will talk with you about your child’s educational, medical and social history and complete a full language assessment. This includes assessments of expressive and receptive language, articulation skills, phonological awareness skills, reading fluency, comprehension, phonics skills and includes a comprehensive dyslexia evaluation.
Testing will take about two hours.
The speech-language pathologist will recommend treatment depending on the results of your child’s evaluation.
What happens after an Evaluation?
Treatment sessions are typically one to two sessions per week. Parents are directly involved in treatment sessions, and we provide a home program so you can help your child’s progress between sessions.
Treatment helps to improve:
Receptive and Expressive Language Skills
Speech sound production
Reading skills such as decoding
Sight word vocabulary
We provide individual treatment for children and adolescents with speech, language and literacy delays.
