Differentiated Introduction to Prefixes

Aligned with the Science of Reading (SOR)
Grades K–5

This structured, differentiated introduction to prefixes is designed to align with Science of Reading principles and support both early learners and upper elementary students through explicit, systematic instruction.

This resource includes two developmentally appropriate lesson pathways:

K–1 Oral Language Lesson

Perfect for emerging readers who are not yet ready for heavy print demands.

Students will:
• Explore prefixes through oral language and movement
• Build meaning awareness before decoding
• Practice listening, speaking, and word play
• Engage in interactive prefix activities

This lesson strengthens morphological awareness without overwhelming young learners with print.

Designed for students ready for decoding and encoding application.

Students will:
• Learn explicit prefix meanings
• Practice decoding prefix-based words
• Apply encoding through structured word building
• Strengthen morphology-to-spelling connections
• Read and write words using taught prefixes

This lesson integrates phonics, morphology, and spelling in a clear, systematic format aligned with SOR best practices.
